Located on the exterior wall of Seongsan Art Hall, Joiri Minaya’s Die Verhüllung (statues of Christopher Columbus and Vasco da Gama on the Kornhausbrücke in Hamburg, Germany) belongs to an ongoing practice of sculptural deconstructions and rewrites that suggest new ways of life and existence for sculpture beyond the role of public art in the city. This particular
work is part of a series being recreated across different cities in which statues of Christopher Columbus and Vasco da Gama on the Kornhaus Bridge in Hamburg, Germany are covered with spandex. Through this act, Minaya questions the contemporary public display and celebration of symbols of colonialism and imperialism.
