Joo Jae hwan’s Long Live Soccer is a new work inspired by the artist’s imaginings around the Changwon Sculpture Biennale and the Cultural Complex Dongnam Ground. Combining humor and critique, Joo presents 13 soccer poems in an exhibition space that runs in a circle like a track. Asking his contemporaries to write poems about soccer, Joo built on these poems to produce the works on display. As such, the theme of this piece is peace and victory; the single red ball suspended in the air symbolizes soccer. The eleven new poems (plus additional two extra) are meant to represent the eleven members of a soccer team. Joo’s soccer-themed works, in turn, are placed in an exhibition space reminiscent of a train station and a sports field track.
