Mette Winckelmann, Emotions are my Power, 2024, textile objects, bicycle parts, sound dimensions variable, Commissioned by the 7th Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2024

Mette Winckelmann treats tactile materials as both essentially spiritual and as products of traditional skills and labor, presenting them as aesthetic manifestos. Emotions are my Power is a responsive installation that interacts with the ceiling structure of Seongsan Art Hall’s outdoor plaza, the Light of the Millennium, sculpture that was erected at the time of the building’s construction, and the indoor columns that run from the basement to the second floor, concealing and revealing the various elements that make up the space. Utilizing mass-produced textiles and discarded bicycle parts to cover, house, and showcase the human body, the artist creates connections between the building's stairs, columns, and the light filtering through the large glass windows. Approaching the work, one clearly hears the sound of sewing machines in a textile mill, while shimmering silvery patterns within arm’s reach create new surfaces that celebrate women's labor and the flexibility of textiles.
