Nevin Aladağ, Marsch (March), 2014, cannonballs casted in iron ( × 94pcs ), dimensions variable, Courtesy of artist and Barakat Contemporary
Nevin Aladağ’s Marsch(March) is, in fact, the beginning of “Rondo Alla Turca,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The different cast-iron hemispheres installed across the wall look like bullet holes, calling to mind the true purpose of military music. The primary function of military music is to dictate the choreography of troop movements, and its time signature determines the marching speed and formation of the soldiers. Exploring new possibilities of sound, Aladağ invites visitors to follow along with the score on the wall and read the notes, enriching the visual representation of the music by physically experiencing it through movement.
