Paik Nam June
Seongsan Art Hall
Paik Nam June, The Spring of Changwon, 2000, 93 pieces of monitors, 700 × 350 cm, Changwon Cultural Foundation
collection
Paik Nam June is always present in the lobby of the first floor of Seongsan Art Hall, the starting point of this exhibition. Whether in the circular exhibition room on the second floor, the first floor, or the lobby, we encounter the Changwon that Paik Nam June sees, and the Paik Nam June that Changwon sees. Originally produced upon the opening of Seongsan Art Hall, The Spring of Changwon is installed as if penetrating the entire interior of the building. The ninety-three TV sets are stacked in three tiers to form a flower in full bloom; each TV, meanwhile, plays the 1969 performance TV Bra for Living Sculpture with cellist Charlotte Moorman. With this piece, we are invited to reflect on what it means to be a “sculpture” through the figure of the performer, who is named a “living sculpture.”
