Sim Yi-Sueng, Spring Road, 2024, concrete, steel, stainless steel, 180 × 220 × 140 cm, Commissioned by the 7th Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2024

For Changwon-based artist Sim Yi-sueng, the city is both an entire civilization and life itself. Known for huge structures and urban sculptures built with wide-ranging materials, for this new piece Sim began with the discovery of the materials themselves. Spring Road, created for the Biennale, is the artist’s letter to the world made manifest. Made from discarded construction materials and old rebar, the piece visualizes a mourning for lost life, and Sim speaks with his body about the things we have forgotten in the process of rapid urbanization.
