Reinventing the Exhibition Experience
A warm welcome to Changwon City where a gentle breeze touches your skin, and the rays of the sun light up the waves of the sea. Changwon is a greater region encompassing the beautiful port cities of Masan and Jinhae. It is a city of art and culture, home to some of the world’s finest sculptors, such as Chongyung KIM (1915-1982), Shin MOON (1923-1995), Chongbae PARK (1935-), Sukwon PARK (1942-), and Youngwon KIM (1947-).
What began as a sculpture symposium 12 years ago has now transformed into one of the most prestigious contemporary sculpture events in Asia and beyond. The Changwon Sculpture Biennale wouldn’t have been what it is today without the leadership and contribution of former Chairpeople and members of the Steering Committee, and former Artistic Directors as follows: Sculpture Symposium Youngho KIM; 1st edition in 2012 Bonggu KIM/Seongrok SEO; 2nd edition in 2014 Yisoon KIM/Taeman CHOI; 3rd edition in 2016 Yongsu SHIN/Jinsup YOON; 4th edition in 2018 Yongsu SHIN/Bummo YOUN; and 5th edition in 2020 Muhyeon HWANG/Sungho KIM. For this year’s event, the 6th installment of the Biennale, I’m pleased to work alongside Chairperson Youngho KIM to ensure the Biennale’s continued success.
This year’s Biennale is held under the theme “Channel: Wave-Particle Duality,” which is a modern-day reinterpretation of the Eastern monistic view of life through the lens of quantum physics. It is designed to invite reflection and dialogue around “I, you, we, culture, and life.” At the same time, the exhibitions are an opportunity for individuals, who are like particles, to feel the state of wave by becoming part of the whole through “engagement,” “exchange,” and “participation.”
The Biennale will offer a whole new visitor experience with the inaugural Open Studio program and novel formats of presenting artworks, including exhibitions taking place in unconventional venues throughout Changwon, Masan, and Jinhae. I look forward to welcoming you all to this joyful celebration of art and creativity.
