Dear all!

Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 leads values for the future

The Moon Jae-in government has announced its long-term cultural policy vision titled 'Culture Vision 2020 - Culture with People'. Among its top policy priorities, the government laid out 'creation of a more self-sustaining environment for artists' allowing them to focus on creative activities in a stable manner, 'spread of art and culture in everyday life' for people to enjoy and have an easy access to art, fostering of a 'sustainable art market' that is fair and transparent, and building a 'solid foundations for the future of art' including laws and institutions with regard to the art field.

The economic growth of Korea has contributed to increase its share in world GDP, amounting to a 2% of the total, and the country now accounts for approximately a 4% of world market in terms of export. Compared to such remarkable economic progress, the share of Korean art market stands at a mere 0.5% of the total or KRW 400 billion, providing a ground for the need to promote the same sector. If we compare such figures with numbers only, it means that the size of domestic art market should be KRW 1.6 trillion to have a 2% share of the world market. Of course, the value of art should not be determined simply by commercial interests. However, the reasons behind why we should build a 'solid ground for the future of art' are not found in art fairs or exhibitions only. It is because of that attempts to transcending physical barriers seeking to take new approaches such as hosting Biennale are meaningful by themselves.

The theme of Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 was selected as 'non-sculpture'. The theme was chosen based on the consideration on such circumstances surrounding the Korean art industry. We are living in an era that requires the spread of transformative technologies related to the fourth industrial revolution such as 3D printing, IoT, big data, expansion of artistic matters and materials, and adoption of innovative sculpture techniques. In this regards, Biennale provides experimental stages that befit the call of time as well as highly sophisticated artistic spheres that are unfolded under certain themes. The 'non-sculpture' parade with novel attempts would certainly lead the value of future.

I sincerely look forward to your continued interest and participation in Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2020 <<Non-Sculpture - Light or Flexible>>
