Changwon,
the home of Korean
master sculptors

Changwon is extremely well-known in the art world as the home of some of Korea’s most notable sculptors, including Kim Chong Yung(1915~1982), Moon Shin(1923~1995), Park Chong Bae(1935~), Park Suk Won(1942~) and Kim Young Won(1947~). To raise awareness around the world of its ever-growing legacy in sculpture and art, Changwon has been hosting a Sculpture Biennale since 2010. Originally, the Biennale began as the “Moonshin International Sculpture Symposium,” honoring the works of world-class sculptor Moon Shin. In 2012, however, the event was reorganized as the Changwon Sculpture Biennale.

CHANNEL : WAVE-PARTICLE DUALITY

In quantum physics, we are a physical being, in other words, a particle with mass and a wave. Therefore, all matter including human beings is much like a frequency that fluctuates as it vibrates, rather than a fixed substance. We maintain a particle state physically, but often experience a wave state emotionally or spiritually

“Channel: Wave-Particle Duality” is a journey for individuals with a body who feel like a particle. It provides them with a chance to realize, even just for a moment, that they can also be a wave by being part of the whole. Once we recognize that we can be a wave-like being, how will it influence our particle-like perspective on everyday life?

This year’s exhibitions offer a moment of such realization through “engagement,” “exchange,” and “participation” and invites contemplation of “I, you, we, culture, and life.” The meaning of “I” and “you” can be expanded to include “individuals (entity) and subjects,” and “Changwon citizens and artists and Korean and international artists and audiences,” respectively.

The Changwon Sculpture Biennale 2022 introduces the concept of the duality of particle and wave properties to the Open Studios of local artists, galleries and art museums. It features the works of sculptors at home and aboard against the backdrop of Seongsan Art Hall, 3·15 Nuri Marine Park, Chang-dong Art Village Art Center, Jinhae Black & White, and outdoor venues to highlight their social, industrial, and environmental implications.

Non-Sculpture - Light or flexible

The theme of this Biennale is "Non-Sculpture - Light or Flexible", the term "non-sculpture" chosen for this event was influenced by three different aspects.

‘Self-denial’ ‘Self-reflection’ Firstly, it is derived from the model that Art historian Rosalind E. KRAUSS uses to address two concepts: ‘not-landscape’ and ‘not-architecture’ which explore the way landscape and architecture meet sculpture and vice versa, in her essay “Sculpture in the Expanded Field” (1979). Having adopted this approach, yet conversely, I’ve transformed her semiotic methodology so that the term non-sculpture is understood as a term for the “self-denial and self-reflection” of sculpture.

‘Non-sculptural experiment for sculpture’ Secondly, I adopted the phrase ‘non-sculpture’ which appears in the essay “The origin of my non-sculpture” (1980) written by renowned Korean sculptor Seung-Taek LEE. According to his essay, the term ‘non-sculpture’ was chosen by Lee to rebel against the legacy of Western modern sculpture and at the same time to clarify his experiment “Non-sculptural experiment for sculpture”.

‘The origin of my non-sculpture’ Finally, this term is widely applied to illustrate the aesthetic of non-materialism in the East.

Through the concept of non-sculpture, I hope that many things, not only landscapes and architecture, can meet each other.

Balance of Non-Sculpting

which combines the spirit of Non-Sculpting and the balance of harmony.

In this '2018 Changwon International Sculpture Biennale', we take over the spirit of Kim Chong young and Moon Shin, who is important in the history of Changwon sculpture.

The theme of the exhibition, < Balance of Non-Sculpting >, which combines the spirit of Non-Sculpting and the balance of harmony. In this way, we will establish the identity of Changwon sculpture with the spiritual heritage of representative art of Changwon Sculpture Biennale, and establish an opportunity for Changwon to firmly establish itself as an international sculpture city.

The theme of < The Balance of Non-Sculpting > may seem like a contradictory and paradoxical expression, but "Non-Sculpting" is a natural state that is not artificial, but a concept that pursues a state of harmony with nature to be.

In addition to formative works based on these themes, we will focus on various aspects and discourses of 'sculpture', which expands the sculptural realm of contemporary social reality. Considering the form and content, we pay attention to the expansion of expressive media and methods. In the aspect of contents, I intend to organize exhibitions mainly on discourse presentations, ie, works that include 'ideology' and 'problem raising'.

The exhibition format is divided into 'outdoor exhibition' and 'indoor exhibition', ie, sculpture park and gallery exhibition, and 'outdoor exhibition' is divided into 'permanent installation works' and 'temporary installation works'.

The exhibition of the art museum sets up a three-dimensional work and a flat work with the subtitle "exception." Special programs provide spectators with a variety of new 'attractions' in another 'extreme' form in the 'sculpture' area.

We will try to expand and extend the existing limited sculpture area and share it with the public enjoyment of art through communication with more active visitors. Furthermore, we would like to position it as a 'Global City of Culture and Art' as a 'sustainable playground for culture and arts', 'a world-sculptural city', and 'Changwon'.

'The original meaning of “Eok-Jo-Chang-Saeng (億兆蒼生),” which is numerous people, was transformed into “numerous objects created and generated with life.” Under the theme, we try to find the basic of modern sculptures from the existing objects in three dimensions. Ranging from sculptures to pottery, installation art, architecture, land art to performance art, the concept of modern sculptures that hovers the line between 3D and 4D will be presented and its possibility will be explored at the biennale.

Dreaming Island

The 2012 Changwon Sculpture Biennale is a sculpture biennial organized after Changwon, Masan and Jinhae were merged into one city to become a base city in the Southeast region. Urban integration is also a welcoming event, but it is also interesting to hold the sculpture biennial for the first time in Korea. Changwon is a place with deep ties to sculpture, and it has produced several outstanding sculptors such as tattoos, Kim Jong-young, Park Jong-bae, Park Seok-won, and Kim Young-won, and this biennial is held in this art town, doubling its meaning. While most art events are held at art galleries, this biennial will be held on Dot Island, a small marine park located off Masan. It is a marine amusement park with a beautiful scenery of various marine plants and fresh jade waves. This is an island 1.5km from the land, and it is loved as a shelter for Changwon citizens that can be reached in 10 minutes by ferry. The 2012 Changwon Sculpture Biennale will be held under the theme of 'Dreaming Island' in consideration of the characteristics of this island. Participating artists consist of 15 domestic and 5 overseas artists, and works with high formative completeness were selected through the recommendation of the general director and deliberation of the organizer. All works on display will be permanently installed at the venue. In preparation for long-term installation, works using hard materials such as stone, iron, stainless steel, bronze, and cement are the main ones, excluding one-time materials such as wood.

'Symmetry'

Symmetry is an aesthetic concept representing tattoo art

Symmetry is an aesthetic concept representing tattoo art, and it is a word that is widely used in the meaning of balance, harmony, relationship, unity, etc. beyond the dimension that indicates a simple geometric form of bilateral symmetry. In connection with contemporary cultural discourse, Symmetry is presented as the basis of the convergence idea pursued by the Earth's community in the 21st century.

It is an open concept that can be realized as a conceptual or abstract sculpture in various fusion forms that express the organic relationship between objects and objects, nature and humans, and spirit and matter.
